Odisha Government has been doing continuous efforts to improve the lives of the citizens of the state. This time, the government has come up with a new scheme Odisha Inter Caste Marriage Scheme. The scheme has been launched by the Chief Minister of Odisha State Minister Naveen Patnaik. Under this scheme, various marriage incentives will be provided to marrying couples. The scheme promotes Inter-caste marriages in the state. A web portal called Sumangal Portal has been launched by the government for the working of the scheme. A number of Rs 2.5 Lakhs will be provided to the Inter-caste marrying couple which was earlier 1 Lakh. The Inter-caste marrying couple will get a one-time incentive within 60 days of application.

Odisha Inter Caste Marriage Scheme Objective

The main objective behind the launching of the scheme was to promote the Inter-caste marriages in the state. Marriages are the key of peace and harmony in the families. So, ultimately the scheme will help the people in maintaining peace and harmony in the state. The scheme aims to help the newly married couple in leading a happy and peaceful life. Onetime Incentive will be provided to the couples under this scheme so that they can start any business or do any work of the choice. One of the main objectives of the scheme was to eliminate the seed of discrimination from the people of the state.

Key Features of the Scheme

Following are the key features of the scheme-

  • An incentive of Rs 2.5 Lakh will be provided to the beneficiaries which were earlier 1 Lakh.
  • The scheme aims to encourage more inter-caste marriages for social equality and removing untouchability.
  • A marriage in which one of the spouses belonged to the Scheduled Caste and the other belonged to a non-Scheduled Caste would be considered for the incentive.
  • The marriage should be valid as per the law and duly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. 
  • Both the spouses should be citizens of India permanent residents of Odisha and should be professing the Hindu religion.
  • The grant would be given only to people marrying for the first time. However in case, the bride is a widow or the bride-groom a widower, they would be eligible for the incentive.
  • The couple has to refund the amount within a year if the marriage ends in divorce within five years,” a government official said. 
  • The incentive amount would be deposited in a joint account of the couple in any nationalized bank and they would be able to withdraw the amount only after three years of marriage.
  • The incentive would also be given for the purchase of lands/essential articles for house-hold or for starting a business.

Documents Required

  • The beneficiaries must have the following documents while applying for the scheme.
  • The beneficiary must have a registered Marriage Certificate.
  • Scanned copy of the caste certificate of both the spouse and mentioning the sub-case in the certificate.
  • Joint photo of both the persons (scanned).
  • Scanned photocopy of Declaration form duly signed: ANNEXURE II & Annexure-IV.
  • Joint account bank pass bank of the marrying couple in any nationalized bank (Scanned copy).
  • Identity Proof.
  • Domicile Certificate of Odisha State.

  • Interested candidates can register on the portal provided by the state government to register themselves eligible for the scheme. Here are some steps which you can follow to apply at the portal.
  • First of all, go to the Official Website of the scheme i.e. Sumangal Portal.
  • The homepage of the website will appear on the screen.

  • Already registered candidates can directly login on the portal by entering their phone number and password.
  • After clicking on Register Here an application form will appear on the screen.
